About the artist
A popular bike lock used by bicycle owners is generically called the U-Lock and this installation is a set of three bike racks inspired by this design.
These locks are generally used to lock a bike wheel and/or bike frame to a bike rack instead of using other locking devices such as cable locks, chains and padlocks. The artist's version of the U-Lock is a very much enlarged, tilted slightly from the vertical, and mounted into the ground with the large part of the lock upwards.
The set of three bike racks was commissioned to replace the standard bike racks in and around the Civic Centre at 128 Prospect Road that were at the site at that time, and was a project that required both functional and design to develop structures that are useful and engaging.
2009
Rick Clise is a baby-boomer, born in California, USA in 1955. After making a move to Australia in 1979 and commencing in Melbourne, Rick moved and settled in Adelaide in 1995 where he now lives and works.
Rick Clise exhibited regularly and was a full time artist from 2004 until 2017. He was represented in SALA from 2007-2011 and held a range of solo and group exhibitions from 2005-2011. In 2013 he received the Arts SA 12 Month Sculpture Hire Winner for his installation in SA Government State Administration Centre foyer and 2012 was the recipient of an Arts SA Independent Makers and Presenters Professional Development Grant. He additionally held the positions on the Heysen Sculpture Biennial Committee (2014) and was a NAVA Board Member (2008-2014).
